Arborist

Trade · Hamilton, New Zealand · Full-Time · $30 - $40/hr

Role: Climbing Arborist with a well-established arboricultural business in Waikato, New Zealand. You will work confidently at height and also help with ground operations and wider tree-care projects.

Type of work: a broad mix that includes residential and commercial properties, plus council, utility and land-clearance projects. You join an experienced crew with professional equipment, ongoing training and structured health and safety practices.

Key point: climbing skill must be proven through real experience, safe practice and consistent results, not just listed on paper. The employer verifies qualifications, practical experience and capability during recruitment, which makes for a more reliable match on both sides. Key Responsibilities

  • Go up into the canopy to look after and manage trees
  • Cut back, shape and fell trees using the right method for each one
  • Step down to ground crew work whenever the job needs it
  • Run chainsaws, climbing gear, machinery and other kit safely, and follow strict safety rules while aloft
  • Support jobs for homeowners, businesses, councils and utilities, as well as land-clearance work
  • Look at each tree first and choose the proper way to tackle it
  • Bring efficient, professional habits to every site, keeping the area tidy and in line with its safety rules
  • Stay coordinated with fellow climbers and the ground team through every job
  • Inspect and maintain your personal protective equipment and arboricultural tools
  • Join toolbox talks, safety meetings and refresher sessions, and take extra training to grow technical and industry knowledge
  • Speak professionally with clients and crew members
  • Keep working dependably as weather, sites and project conditions change

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Minimum Level 3 NZQA Arboriculture qualification or comparable industry credentials; relevant overseas qualifications and experience may be assessed for suitability
  • Minimum 2 years' hands-on experience as a climber
  • A demonstrated record of aerial as well as ground-based arboricultural work
  • Class 1 Driver Licence, Restricted or higher
  • Can safely handle hard physical work outdoors
  • Comfortable up at heights and working through varied weather
  • Takes strong personal responsibility and has a dependable work ethic
  • Brings a positive, cooperative attitude to the crew
  • Committed to health and safety at work, with high standards of professionalism and workmanship
  • Can prove genuine arboricultural skills and experience
  • Level 3 Utility Arboriculture qualification is an advantage
  • Class 2 Driver Licence is an advantage
  • Applicants must be able to show suitable evidence of qualifications and employment experience
  • International applicants must meet New Zealand immigration and employment eligibility requirements
