Boat Builder/Engineer/Alloy Fabricator

Gore, in New Zealand's Southland region: a specialist manufacturer of high-performance aluminium boats is looking for a skilled Welder and Fabricator.

Experience needed: proven aluminium welding and marine fabrication work, and dependable time in a workshop that you can demonstrate.

Day to day: building and finishing boats from engineering drawings, using the workshop's fabrication gear and professional welding methods. Precision, quality and teamwork are what count.

Sponsorship: where a candidate meets the technical requirements, an employer-supported pathway may be open. The aim is to match real skills and checked work history with the right role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret fabrication and engineering drawings
  • MIG weld aluminium and also weld other metals
  • Handle fitting, assembly, fabrication and boat-building tasks
  • Measure, cut and set out materials ready for fabrication
  • Operate benders, cranes, saws, shears and other fabrication machinery, together with hand and power tools such as grinders, drills, levels and squares
  • Inspect welded and fabricated components for quality and accuracy, holding welding standards and workmanship steady
  • Follow health and safety procedures in the workplace without exception
  • Keep the work area, equipment and tools clean and in order
  • Work with supervisors and teammates to meet production requirements
  • Suggest improvements to workshop processes, productivity and project outcomes
  • Complete time sheets, requests for materials and other paperwork the job requires
  • Raise any material, equipment or production concerns with the appropriate supervisor

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Proven professional background in boat building, fabrication or welding, including strong practical aluminium welding
  • Demonstrated ability to MIG weld to a high standard, and experience with various metals and welding processes
  • Accurate interpretation of engineering drawings
  • Practical knowledge of workshop equipment and fabrication machinery, plus experience with the hand and power tools used in engineering
  • Understanding of safe workshop practice and occupational health and safety requirements
  • Strong accuracy and attention to detail, delivering workmanship that is consistent and high quality
  • Good practical fabrication and problem-solving skills
  • Effective working alone or within a team
  • Reliable and safety-conscious, with commitment to meeting production standards
  • Willing to supply evidence of employment experience and relevant skills
  • Willing to work in Southland, New Zealand
