Location: Arrowtown, Otago, New Zealand. Role: Chef.
Who it suits: cooks with years in commercial kitchens and a record they can prove, who now want to take charge of what goes out on the plate, how the brigade performs and how the kitchen runs each day.
How you will be judged: on your demonstrated experience, professional background and capacity to perform at a senior level.
Where it can lead: stronger skills in kitchen leadership, menu development, stock management, supplier coordination and restaurant operations, with more responsibility and progression open to strong performers.

Key Responsibilities
- Share leadership of a kitchen crew numbering up to 12, directing them and backing them up on the line
- Coordinate the kitchen through prep time and service
- Answer for consistent quality and plating, cooking and finishing every dish to the established recipe and the demands of service
- Pick ingredients on freshness, quality and suitability
- Do the prep: cleaning, chopping, blending, seasoning, heating, cooling
- Keep an eye on cooking processes so times and temperatures stay correct
- Adapt preparation for special diets and specific food needs
- Cover different kitchen sections when the operation needs it
- Inspect deliveries, flag stock below standard, and store ingredients properly
- Monitor supplies, inventory and equipment, and support purchasing and dealings with suppliers
- Contribute recipes and menu ideas and improve current dishes
- Run accurate, consistent kitchen routines and use digital tools for accountability and reporting on operations
- Watch food usage to help keep costs down, help monitor labour and efficiency, and report performance issues to management
- Foster a positive, professional culture and keep standards up whether trade is busy or quiet
- Identify operational problems and take action to fix them
- Maintain cleanliness, hygiene and equipment, follow food safety rules and workplace procedures, and help improve kitchen systems and service
Requirements & Eligibility
- Minimum 3 years' professional kitchen experience
- Background in commercial kitchens, hospitality venues or established restaurants, including proven time in a senior or responsible kitchen role
- Genuine, verifiable work history relevant to this position, supported by documents for your qualifications and professional experience
- Can show practical cooking and food prep skills and has strong knowledge of professional kitchen procedures
- Confident moving across multiple kitchen sections
- Proven at coordinating and supporting fellow kitchen staff
- Previous supervision or leadership of a kitchen team: highly desirable
- Strong grasp of presentation and food quality standards
- Knows dietary requirements and safe food preparation
- Hands-on with stock control, inventory and kitchen supplies
- Advantageous: an understanding of food costs and operational efficiency
- Advantageous: experience assisting with menu development or creating recipes
- Stays calm and efficient when service is under pressure
- Strong communicator and team player who works well with suppliers and management
- Professional outlook and willing to take responsibility
- Willing to learn restaurant digital systems for accountability and reporting
- Fluent English: speaking, reading and writing
- Must meet applicable New Zealand employment and visa requirements
