CNC Machine Operator / Machinist
Trade · Christchurch Central, Canterbury, New Zealand · Full-Time · $35/hr
Location: Christchurch Central, Canterbury. An engineering business with technically challenging work is recruiting CNC Machinists whose hands-on expertise is real and can be checked. What counts is what you are able to set up, make, measure and fix, rather than the job title printed on a CV.
Expect variety. You will move between CNC milling, turning and multi-axis machining, covering precision parts, complex industrial pieces, one-off jobs, short production batches, plus repair and refurbishment. Machinists here need to assess each task, reach informed technical decisions and deliver accurate work with little supervision.
The hiring process puts weight on verified experience and practical capability, so the machining background you claim needs solid proof of your skills and work record. Where candidates meet the required criteria, the employer can offer sponsorship into the New Zealand engineering sector.

- Work out the right tooling, workholding setup and cutting parameters from engineering drawings, dimensions and technical specs
- Prepare CNC machinery for precision operations, proving and refining each program before production begins
- Operate milling, turning and multi-axis CNC equipment
- Produce components within specified measurements and tolerances, holding a steady standard of accuracy and workmanship
- Measure and inspect parts mid-process, monitoring the machining and making adjustments when required
- Sort out machining, tooling and setup problems as they arise
- Apply independent technical judgement when a job is new or challenging
- Take on prototypes, one-off pieces and low-volume orders, along with bigger, complex industrial components
