CNC Machine Operator / Machinist

A precision engineering firm in Christchurch, Canterbury has an opening for a CNC Machine Operator / Machinist. The company is well established and machines parts for clients across many different industries.

What the job involves: you will set up, prove and run CNC milling machines on your own, making and repairing precision-engineered parts. Work is mostly one-off and small-batch, done on advanced CNC machining centres, and ranges from fine precision parts through to large industrial equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently set up, prove and run CNC milling machines, including adjustments and program verification
  • Study engineering drawings and technical specifications, then machine parts to the stated tolerances
  • Choose the right tooling, fixtures and workholding for each job
  • Make one-off and small-batch components for a range of engineering projects
  • Check parts during machining so accuracy and quality stay on target
  • Troubleshoot machining problems to keep productivity high
  • Uphold strong standards of precision, workmanship and safety
  • Work alongside the production team so project deadlines are met
  • Keep machines and work areas clean and in order, and support continuous improvement and efficient manufacturing practices

Requirements & Eligibility

  • A proven background as a CNC Machinist, with strong CNC milling experience
  • Able to set up, prove and operate CNC milling machines without supervision
  • Hands-on experience running multi-axis CNC machining centres in a precision engineering setting
  • Strong skill in reading and interpreting engineering drawings
  • Sound understanding of machining processes, cutting tools and tolerances
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting ability, plus high attention to detail and a commitment to quality work
  • Able to work efficiently where manufacturing is high-mix and low-volume
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work well as part of a team
  • Commitment to workplace health and safety practices
  • A relevant trade qualification or equivalent industry experience is highly regarded
