Diesel Fitter

A well-established construction and engineering company in Queensland needs a Diesel Fitter / Heavy Plant Mechanic to keep its mixed fleet of construction and mobile plant running dependably.

This suits an experienced tradesperson with a real track record on heavy machinery, solid skills in diagnosing complex faults and repairs finished to a high standard. The work goes well beyond routine workshop servicing: you will handle specialised plant and respond to breakdowns out in the field.

Your trade credentials, work history and hands-on experience will decide your suitability. Employer sponsorship is available for appropriately qualified overseas applicants who meet the experience and visa criteria. Mechanics in Pakistan should keep trade certificates and employer references organised for that assessment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Service and maintain a varied fleet of heavy construction and mobile plant, including excavators, cranes and piling rigs
  • Deliver planned servicing and preventative maintenance programs
  • Find mechanical, hydraulic and electrical faults on heavy mobile equipment and decide on the right repair
  • Replace worn, damaged or failed mechanical and hydraulic parts using suitable workshop tools and diagnostic equipment
  • Respond to breakdowns in the field, prioritising jobs and getting equipment back into operation efficiently
  • Inspect machinery on site and identify maintenance or repair needs
  • Test machines after repairs to confirm they run safely and reliably
  • Log all servicing, repairs, inspections and part replacements
  • Work on your own when attending remote or on-site equipment problems
  • Keep housekeeping, safety and workshop practices to a high standard
  • Follow every relevant workplace health and safety procedure

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Recognised Diesel Fitting, Heavy Plant Mechanic, Mobile Plant Mechanic or equivalent trade qualification
  • Proven industry experience repairing and maintaining heavy mobile plant, with a strong background in construction, earthmoving or specialised heavy equipment
  • Practical knowledge of excavators, cranes, piling rigs or similar machinery
  • Advanced mechanical diagnostic and fault-finding ability
  • Sound knowledge of hydraulic systems and component repair, plus experience with electrical diagnostics on mobile plant
  • Previous breakdown response or field-service experience
  • Able to troubleshoot and finish repairs without constant supervision
  • Comfortable moving between the workshop and construction sites
  • Current Australian driver's licence or relevant eligibility to obtain one
  • Strong safety awareness, professional work practices and a reliable, adaptable, self-motivated approach
  • Able to provide evidence of relevant qualifications and professional experience
  • Experience with CAT, Komatsu, Hitachi, Liebherr, Tadano, Grove, Franna, Terex or comparable equipment will be advantageous
