Here is the role in brief. A crane building and servicing business in Christchurch, New Zealand, is hiring a full-time Fitter / Turner and Welder. The company has operated since 2017 and refurbishes and maintains cranes and lifting equipment around the country, both in its workshop and in the field.

The work runs in a clear order, from machining crane parts on conventional machines to certified welding and fabrication, then fault-finding and maintenance on lifting systems, always to New Zealand safety and engineering standards. The team is small and expects high workmanship and honest customer service. Eligibility is set out plainly as the legal right to work in New Zealand or a willingness to undergo the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) process, which is employer-sponsored.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and operate lathes, mills and drills to make, alter and repair precision crane components, and carry out certified welding and structural fabrication in steel and aluminium for crane refurbishments and custom builds.
  • Investigate mechanical faults and breakdowns and complete preventative maintenance on mid-to-high-level lifting systems.
  • Work strictly within New Zealand workplace health and safety protocols, engineering standards and workshop guidelines.

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Trade Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Fitting and Turning / Fabrication), or the NZQA Level 4 equivalent.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience after qualification in heavy mechanical engineering, fabrication or plant maintenance.
  • Experience with cranes or hydraulics is highly regarded.
  • Ability to read technical drawings and blueprints and interpret them accurately.
  • Excellent analytical problem-solving skills.
  • A proactive approach to tasks.
  • Legal right to work in New Zealand, or a willingness to undergo the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) process.
