Head Chef & Cook

Opening soon in Ballarat, Victoria: a restaurant with an Italian-inspired menu, now recruiting full-time kitchen staff.

  • Head Chef: runs the kitchen, sets the standard for every plate and has a hand in creating the menu
  • Chefs, Cooks and Kitchen Hands: form the rest of the launch team

Selection is about evidence. The employer is after people who are ready to start work and who can prove their skills, experience and steady employment record. As the operation grows, consistency, teamwork, quality and professionalism will define the dining experience. Kitchen staff from Pakistan and elsewhere should prepare an English CV with clear dates for every role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct day-to-day kitchen work and the people doing it, coaching and backing up each team member
  • Produce and present top-quality dishes inspired by Italian and European cooking
  • Hold flavour, plating and quality steady from service to service
  • Contribute to menu planning, recipe prep, daily specials and seasonal items
  • Take charge of prep, buying, ordering and rotating stock
  • Track kitchen resources, ingredient costs and how much stock is on hand
  • Help plan labour so the kitchen runs efficiently
  • Apply kitchen procedures accurately and the same way every time
  • Meet hygiene, food safety and workplace rules, and keep the cooking area tidy, safe and in order
  • Move quickly and efficiently when the restaurant is busy
  • Keep communication flowing between management and the kitchen
  • Build a supportive, professional workplace where the team pulls together

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Verifiable experience in a commercial kitchen that is relevant to the role
  • For the Head Chef position: minimum 3 years as a senior chef or Head Chef, with the strong leadership and communication skills a senior position needs
  • For the other roles: earlier work as a Chef, Cook or Kitchen Hand
  • Proof of relevant cooking ability and professional background
  • Italian or modern European cuisine experience is highly regarded
  • Recognised trade training or relevant culinary qualifications are advantageous
  • Know-how in food costing, stock control, ordering and running a kitchen
  • Can maintain high standards when the pace is fast
  • Solid understanding of food safety and hygiene
  • Organised, dependable and professional at work, and effective as part of a kitchen crew
  • Can work the hospitality shifts required, evenings and weekends included
  • Employer sponsorship may be available to eligible applicants, depending on skills, experience and applicable visa requirements
