HVAC Service Technician

Role summary: a long-running HVAC and refrigeration services firm in the Waikato region of New Zealand wants a seasoned HVAC/Refrigeration Service Technician who can own complex servicing and maintenance jobs from start to finish.

What the employer is looking for: real commercial exposure to HVAC, refrigeration, chillers and central plant. Faults must be pinpointed correctly and fixed reliably, whatever kind of customer site you are on.

How you will be assessed: your papers, employment record and field experience must clearly support the skills you claim, and all of it needs to be verifiable. Key Responsibilities

  • Fault work: diagnose problems with compressors, fan motors, refrigerant circuits and linked components, then select a suitable repair
  • Routine work: inspection, servicing and repair of commercial air-con and refrigeration systems, plus planned preventative maintenance on all HVAC gear
  • Central plant: keep chilled water plant running and troubleshoot it when problems appear
  • Equipment range: VRF/VRV systems, air- and water-cooled chillers, DX units and process cooling on chilled water
  • Projects: install, commission and start up new HVAC and refrigeration systems
  • Documentation: work from construction drawings, technical documents and equipment specs
  • Pipe and weld: ACR copper pipework and welding whenever needed
  • Testing: pressure tests and evacuation of systems
  • Electrical: authorised isolation, disconnection and reconnection
  • Controls: calibrate temperature control systems and operate HVAC controls together with Building Management System interfaces
  • Safety: follow each site's rules, PPE procedures and Health & Safety standards; attend toolbox meetings and site inductions, and report on safety
  • Customers: deliver professional workmanship at every site and build positive relationships through courteous communication
  • Callouts: take your turn on the required after-hours roster

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Qualification: National Certificate in Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning, or National Trade Test Certificate Class III Assistant Tradesperson
  • Alternative route: applicants lacking the specified qualification may be considered if they bring 8+ years of relevant experience
  • Post-qualification experience: at least 5 years with chillers and central plant systems
  • Commercial background: demonstrated HVAC and refrigeration work, including practical familiarity with chillers, VRF/VRV, DX and chilled water systems
  • Technical ability: strong fault-finding, diagnostic and repair skills, plus a history of installing, commissioning and starting up HVAC and refrigeration systems
  • Drawings: capable of reading and understanding technical drawings and equipment specifications
  • Work style: self-directed, takes ownership of assigned jobs and shows a consistent record of professional workmanship
  • People skills: strong customer service and communication
  • Roster and safety: prepared to be on call, and committed to safe work and professional behaviour on site
  • Evidence: able to supply supporting proof of your qualifications and relevant employment
  • Sponsorship: offered to eligible overseas applicants who satisfy the role requirements and the applicable visa criteria
