Marine Technician

Location: Thames-Coromandel, Waikato, New Zealand. Role: Marine Technician / Outboard Motor Mechanic, full-time.

A marine servicing business with a solid history wants a capable mechanic who has worked in the industry for real and can confidently own the full job on marine motors: finding the problem, servicing the unit and fixing it.

Skills the business will value most: fault diagnosis on engines, mechanical repair work, boat electrical systems, commissioning and routine upkeep. Expect a mix of workshop, mobile and on-the-water work alongside skilled colleagues, plus ongoing technical training on current marine technology. Candidates from Pakistan and other countries should have their trade papers and work references ready in English.

Key Responsibilities

  • Trace problems in the fuel, cooling, electrical and mechanical systems of boat engines and decide on the correct fix
  • Look after petrol outboards and other marine power units through routine servicing and preventative work
  • Pull down, check and reassemble motors and their parts, swapping out components and doing full overhauls and repairs
  • Tune engines and test how they run
  • Run computer-based diagnostic tools and the software supplied by manufacturers
  • Repair the starting, charging and wider electrical systems on boats
  • Handle MerCruiser sterndrive and inboard work when it comes in
  • Rig new outboards with their controls, gauges and wiring, and install marine electronics and accessories
  • Carry out pre-delivery checks and commission new installations
  • Take boats out for sea trials and confirm everything is working as it should
  • Go out to customers for on-site servicing and repair work when required
  • Fill in job sheets and keep service and technical paperwork up to date
  • Stick to the factory specifications and the repair methods manufacturers recommend
  • Run a tidy, safe and professional workshop and turn out consistently high-quality work

Requirements & Eligibility

  • NZQF Level 4 qualification in a marine, mechanical or related trade, or an overseas qualification of equal standing
  • Minimum 3 years working on internal-combustion engines in a relevant role
  • Demonstrated hands-on work with outboard or marine motors
  • Proven skill at diagnosing engine faults and fixing them properly
  • Strong practical understanding of servicing engines and changing mechanical parts
  • Experience with marine charging and electrical systems
  • Can operate computerised diagnostic equipment and follow technical specifications and factory service manuals
  • Mercury outboard experience is highly regarded
  • MerCruiser experience is highly regarded
  • SmartCraft and DTS systems knowledge is advantageous
  • Training or certification from a marine manufacturer is an advantage
  • Strong at solving problems and troubleshooting
  • Works independently and owns each job, while also adding value to a skilled technical team
  • Firm commitment to safety at work and to quality workmanship
  • Full driver’s licence is preferred
  • Must meet the relevant New Zealand employment and immigration requirements; employer sponsorship available for overseas candidates with suitable qualifications
