Motor Mechanic

An automotive business with an established presence in Alice Springs, Central Australia NT, is hiring a qualified Light Vehicle Mechanic. The ideal person is dependable and has hands-on experience in servicing, maintenance, fault diagnosis and mechanical repair work.

Contract terms: the first contract lasts 6 months, and you can work full-time or part-time. A move to a permanent position may be possible, depending on your performance and the needs of the business.

Since the employer prefers an IELTS score, book your English test early if you do not have a recent result.

Key Responsibilities

  • Test and inspect vehicles to pinpoint and confirm faults, checking mechanical and electronic components for wear or defects
  • Repair engines, transmissions, steering and brakes
  • Service air-conditioning, carry out related repairs and perform wheel alignments
  • Handle scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance in line with service specifications
  • Work on accident-damaged vehicles and restoration jobs, from inspection and diagnosis through to repair
  • Confirm each vehicle is roadworthy, safe and compliant with applicable state regulations
  • Record every inspection, service, repair and maintenance job in detail
  • Coordinate with the vehicle operations team to keep vehicles ready for customer bookings
  • Determine which spare parts are needed, help keep workshop stock at suitable levels, and brief management on technical findings, repair needs and estimated costs
  • Run a clean, orderly and safe workshop that meets WorkSafe requirements
  • Deliver reliable, detailed, consistent work efficiently, whether on your own or alongside the wider team

Requirements & Eligibility

  • A recognised trade qualification in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology, or equivalent
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant professional experience working as a Motor Mechanic
  • Demonstrated hands-on background in diagnosing, servicing and repairing vehicles, with the ability to inspect and diagnose mechanical and electronic vehicle systems
  • Current driver's licence
  • Strong English communication skills, written and spoken; IELTS Band 6 or above preferred
  • Able to explain technical problems, repair options and estimated costs in clear terms
  • Strong diagnostic and analytical capabilities
  • Excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Good time management and organisation
  • High level of attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
  • Works effectively both alone and within a team, with commitment to workplace safety and keeping vehicles roadworthy
  • Sponsorship / immigration support available for the right candidate
