Quality Assurance Manager

Role: Quality Assurance Manager. Employer: an established Australian food processor. Location: Newcastle, in the Hunter region of New South Wales.

The purpose of the job is to make quality, food safety and compliance stronger at the site. You will answer for quality outcomes and for keeping food safety systems, regulatory obligations, what customers expect and in-house standards on track, which calls for real technical knowledge and sound judgement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take charge of quality assurance and food safety for the whole site, so the systems behind both stay effective
  • Go over the Approved Arrangements and the compliance steps tied to them, make improvements, and keep the plant within applicable Australian food safety and regulatory rules
  • Organise audit programs run internally, by customers and by regulators, with the site ready to be audited at any time
  • Look into quality incidents, non-conformances and failed processes, and drive corrective and preventive work until each item is properly closed
  • Carry out mock recalls, traceability exercises and verification programs
  • Keep records, quality documents and compliance information correct and current
  • Measure production against the set food safety and quality standards, and lead pre-operational, hygiene and process verification checks
  • Steer the QA team day to day with technical direction, coaching and developing each member to lift quality results site-wide
  • Encourage every worker to own their part in a positive food safety culture
  • Spot where quality systems, processes and operational controls can be better, partnering with production and management to settle quality and compliance problems
  • Support animal welfare requirements and the industry standards that apply

Requirements & Eligibility

  • A qualification relevant to the role in Food Science, Food Technology, Agricultural Science, Quality Management or a comparable discipline
  • Professional work history in food manufacturing, compliance, food safety or quality assurance
  • Hands-on understanding of food safety management systems and HACCP principles
  • Has led or helped with audits, whether regulatory, customer or quality audits
  • Able to pinpoint the reasons behind non-conformances and put lasting fixes in place
  • Experience overseeing preventive and corrective actions
  • A strong grasp of traceability, verification and quality documentation procedures
  • Can keep standards high inside a regulated production setting
  • Has previously supervised, coordinated or developed quality staff
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities, and confident in communicating and managing stakeholders
  • Works well alongside senior management and production teams
  • Food processing or export industry experience is advantageous
  • A background in meat processing, DAFF compliance or Approved Arrangements is highly regarded
  • International qualifications and professional experience that are relevant will be considered
  • Committed to Australian standards for compliance, food safety and the workplace
  • Visa sponsorship is on offer for a suitable overseas candidate
