Video interview tips for Australia jobs: a step-by-step plan for Pakistani applicants

A Pakistani man wearing earphones speaks on a laptop video call at a sunlit desk in his Lahore home.

A video interview for an Australian job is a real interview: the employer wants to see that you can do the work, explain your experience clearly in English and arrive prepared. Get three things right before the call: a set-up that works, short spoken examples from your own jobs, and experience documents that match every word you say. And remember the most important warning sign: a genuine employer does not ask you to pay for an interview, a job or "visa processing".

What a video interview with an Australian employer looks like

For candidates who are still overseas, the first interview is usually a video call. You may meet a manager, a supervisor from the workshop or kitchen, and sometimes a person from human resources.

The tone is often relaxed. Interviewers may use first names, chat for a minute and ask open questions such as "Walk me through a normal day in your last job".

Trade interviews in Australia are practical. A boilermaker may be asked which welding processes and materials they use, how they read drawings and how they check their own work. A machinist may be asked which machines and controls they have run. If you are applying for roles like this boilermaker and metal fabricator job in Perth or this CNC machinist position in Sydney, prepare detail, not general claims.

Set up the call from Karachi, Lahore or Islamabad

Test everything a day early, at the same time of day as the real call.

  • Time: write the interview time in both the employer's Australian city time and Pakistan time, then confirm it in a reply email.
  • Power and internet: charge your laptop or phone fully and keep a mobile data package ready in case of load-shedding or a weak connection.
  • Room: pick a quiet room, face a window or lamp so your face is lit, and keep the wall behind you plain.
  • Sound: use earphones with a microphone to cut echo and street noise.
  • Platform: install the app named in the invitation (Zoom, Microsoft Teams or another) and do a test call with a friend.
  • Back-up: include your phone number in your confirmation email and say you will reconnect at once if the line drops.

How Australian interviewers talk, and how to answer

Australian interviewers usually prefer short, direct answers backed by a real example.

A simple pattern works: the situation, what you did, and the result. Keep each answer to about a minute, then stop and let them ask more.

  • Speak a little slower than usual. A short pause before answering is fine.
  • If you miss a word or an accent, say "Sorry, could you repeat that?" Guessing is worse.
  • Name the tools, machines, materials and safety steps you really use. Specific words prove experience.
  • Be honest about gaps: "I have not used that model, but I ran a similar one for..." sounds stronger than a vague yes.
  • Prepare two or three questions of your own, such as who you would report to, what a normal roster looks like and what training happens in the first weeks.

Your spoken English in the interview is not a visa test, but it tells the employer how you will cope on the job. For the visa itself, Home Affairs does not accept English tests delivered entirely online at home, such as IELTS Online, so book a secure test centre if your visa needs a test.

Questions about your experience and attested documents

When a job comes with sponsorship, the employer is already thinking about the visa. For the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), applicants need at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field, gained within the last 5 years. Some occupations also need a skills assessment by Trades Recognition Australia or VETASSESS, started before the visa application is lodged. Our guide to the Australia work visa from Pakistan explains the whole process.

Expect questions like these:

  • "From when to when did you work there, and was it full-time?"
  • "What did you do on a normal day?"
  • "Can you send a reference or experience certificate?"
  • "Have you started a skills assessment?"

Your answers, your CV and your papers must tell the same story. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs attests experience certificates only when they are on the letter pad of the institute or department, with the named seal and signature of the head of human resources. Some trades need an earlier step: electrician, technician, workshop and mechanic experience certificates go first to NAVTTC or the National Training Bureau, cooking and chef certificates to the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation, and engineering documents to the Pakistan Engineering Council.

If your letter is on plain paper, or its dates differ from your CV, fix it before you start interviewing. The attestation section of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website shows the current requirements.

For the order of offices, see which body attests your experience certificate before MOFA.

Your preparation plan, step by step

  1. Read the job ad line by line and list every skill, tool and licence it mentions.
  2. Update your CV so each item on that list appears under a real job with correct dates. A clean English layout from Build AI CV keeps it easy for an Australian manager to scan.
  3. Check each experience certificate: letterhead, the HR head's named seal and signature, and trade-body attestation if your trade needs it.
  4. Write a one-minute answer to "Tell me about yourself" and three examples: a job you are proud of, a problem you fixed and a safety situation you handled.
  5. Practise out loud in English with a friend on a video call, and record yourself once to spot habits.
  6. Test your set-up the day before and confirm the time by email.
  7. After the call, send a short thank-you email and write down any next steps the interviewer mentioned.

Fake interviews that end with a request for money

Some "interviews" exist only to collect fees. Scamwatch, the Australian Government's scam advice service, lists these warning signs of job scams: unexpected contact on WhatsApp, Signal or Telegram, a quick hiring process with no interview, and a request to pay a recruitment fee or for training materials before starting. A short chat followed by a payment demand is not an Australian job interview.

Not sure whether a call is genuine? Run through these seven red flags of a fake interview scam for an abroad job before you pay or send any document.

A fee request often comes dressed up as an interview result. Before you pay anyone, read what Pakistani law says about paying money for a job abroad.

Home Affairs adds more red flags: Australia does not issue "work permits" or visa labels, anyone promising an Australian visa is misleading you, ImmiAccount is the only official website for applying, and emails claiming to come from the department that do not end in .gov.au are scams. Read what Home Affairs says about visa scams before you share any documents.

Pakistani law points the same way. Under section 9 of the Emigration Ordinance, 1979, no one other than the Overseas Employment Corporation may recruit Pakistanis for emigration, advertise, or hold interviews or tests for that recruitment without prior permission from the Director-General of the BE&OE or the area's Protector of Emigrants. Under section 22, a person who is not an Overseas Employment Promoter and demands or receives money for providing a foreign job can face up to fourteen years in prison and a fine of up to two million rupees.

If an agent in Pakistan arranges your interview, follow the BE&OE precautions: verify the OEP's valid licence, confirm there is a genuine work demand, read the contract terms carefully, check them with the Protector of Emigrants and get a receipt for every payment. Complaints about fake agents go to the Federal Investigation Agency at complaints@fia.gov.pk or on 051-111-345-786.

Interviewing for New Zealand? Immigration New Zealand warns that job offer scams are common in South Asia, and New Zealand employers cannot charge you fees for a job. Our guide to the New Zealand work visa from Pakistan explains the employer-led process.

After arrival, an Australian employer may ask you to show your skills in person. The Fair Work Ombudsman says an unpaid trial may be unlawful if it lasts longer than needed to demonstrate the skills (from an hour to one shift, depending on the work), goes beyond a skills demonstration or is not directly supervised.

Common mistakes Pakistani applicants make in video interviews

  • Answers that do not match the papers. Claiming more years or different duties than your experience certificate shows creates doubt straight away.
  • Plain-paper experience letters. MOFA attests only letters on the organisation's letter pad with the HR head's named seal and signature.
  • Reading from the screen. Interviewers notice eyes moving across text. Keep short notes, not a script.
  • Paying someone to "arrange" the interview. Taking money for a foreign job without an OEP licence is an offence in Pakistan, and a real employer does not sell interviews.
  • No backup when the call drops. Without a spare data package or a phone number in the email, a good interview can simply end.
  • Sending your passport too early. Scamwatch advises never sending your passport or identity documents to an employer or recruitment firm unless you are certain they are genuine.

Trade interviews focus on hands-on skill, so browse manufacturing jobs abroad and practise your answers against real job ads before your call.

Frequently asked questions

Do employers in Australia interview candidates in Pakistan by video?

Yes, a video call is a practical way for an employer abroad to meet a candidate who is still in Pakistan. The BE&OE's own FAQ lists direct employment found through the internet as one lawful way to get a foreign job. What matters is that the employer is real, you never pay for the job, and you complete your emigration formalities before you travel.

Is it a scam if the whole interview happens on WhatsApp?

Not always, but be careful. Scamwatch lists unexpected contact on WhatsApp, Signal or Telegram and a quick hiring process with no proper interview as warning signs of job scams. If a few messages are followed by a request for a fee, stop and do not send money or documents.

Will the interviewer ask about my English test?

They may, because some visas need an English test and the employer wants to plan ahead. Home Affairs accepts several tests taken at a secure test centre but does not accept tests taken fully online at home. Say honestly whether you have a result or when your test is booked.

What if my experience certificate is not attested yet?

Tell the interviewer honestly and explain when it will be ready. MOFA attests experience certificates only on the organisation's letter pad with the named seal and signature of the head of human resources, and some trades need NAVTTC, NTB, PTDC or PEC attestation first. Start this work before your interviews, not after an offer.

Key takeaways

  • Test your camera, sound and internet a day early and keep a backup connection.
  • Answer with short, real examples from your own work.
  • Make sure your CV, your answers and your attested experience certificates match.
  • Never pay for an interview, a job offer or a "work permit".
  • Check any Pakistani agent's OEP licence and keep receipts for every payment.
