Position overview first. A well-established and busy waterfront restaurant in Northland, New Zealand, is recruiting a Sous Chef to support its Executive Chef.
The restaurant focuses on fresh flavours, quality local ingredients and a relaxed dining style. In this role you will help lead the kitchen team, maintain high standards and keep daily operations smooth, including on the heaviest service days.
The terms are clear. The position is permanent or fixed-term, with a minimum of 30 hours of work per week. Applicants holding New Zealand work eligibility are preferred, and sponsorship may be considered for others.

Key Responsibilities
- Deputise for the Executive Chef during their absence
- Confirm that each chef understands the day's requirements
- Maintain the required stock levels at the correct standard
- Keep timetables, leave rosters and attendance registers updated
- Ensure hygiene regulations are followed throughout the kitchen
- Report maintenance problems and follow up until they are resolved
- Manage communication between the restaurant and the kitchen
- Check all dishes before service for quality, quantity, presentation and temperature
- Conduct regular on-the-job training and treat all staff with fairness and courtesy
Requirements & Eligibility
- Solid experience in a busy, quality-focused kitchen
- Ready to step up to Sous Chef level, or already working as a Sous Chef
- Strong leadership skills
- Ability to motivate a team
- Genuine passion for great food and consistency
- Excellent organisation and communication skills, and a cool head in busy periods
- Positive attitude, good work ethic and a sense of humour
